Expert point of view

The Redmi A4 5G is Xiaomi’s budget smartphone for the next year, dedicated to making 5G accessible for everyone. The Redmi A4 5G was launched in India at a highly competitive price point with suggestions of the model selling at less tahn 100 USD and it is a true budget smartphone. Below is the overview of the phone design, look at its performance and some of the other features installed in the phone.

Design

The Redmi A4 5G is a surprise. You see an entry-level phone, under Rs 10,000, and yet, it seems way too premium against ordinary prices. It sports a glass sandwich construction with durable glass covering the front and back, surrounded by a polycarbonate frame that presents a metallic look. This glass-back design is rarely seen in this price segment, giving the A4 a much more classy ambience with the warranty of dust and splash-resistant protection under IP52.

The two available colors are Sparkle Purple and Starry Black, both slightly shimmering; the purple has a metallic shimmer, whereas the black looks glossy with a dust-removing coat. Xiaomi has cleverly combined the design excellence with the circular camera island, which has an argyle texture around the 50MP lens. This makes a visual statement in the direction of multi-sensor setups and adds a bit of the panache without actually making it bulky.

With all its 6.88 inches of display, the phone remains quite thin with just large 17.47cm and feels sturdy with a weight of 212 g. The flat edges feel good to hold that said, one-handed use might be difficult for some because of its size.

The display is surrounded by obvious bezels, more so to be noticed on the thicker bottom chin, and to top it all is a dated water-drop notch. It may not be the sleekest design, but the overall look is still pleasant.

The side layouts are just perfect: to the right lies a quick side-mounted fingerprint scanner integrated into the power key; to the left, the SIM tray, and expandable storage come. At the bottom lie the USB-C connector and the mono speaker, and there is a nice surprise of a 3.5 mm headphone built on the top!

Display

It features a rather large 6.88-inch display with an HD+ Display that provides a good view of the screen for video watching, reading, and multitasking. The display is Full HD+ (2460 x 1080 pixels), giving crisp visuals and very decent color accuracy for budget phones. It is not exactly vibrant or-eyed-popping like the ones on AMOLED panels in higher-end phones, but this display is quite sharp with good viewing angles and hence can very well do for everyday use.

Redmi A4 5G display

One of the best features of this display is its adaptive 120Hz refresh rate, which gives much smoother scrolling, transitions, and responsiveness than a standard 60Hz panel. The difference is really felt when one is switching between apps or just browsing through social media, giving the user some illusions of a premium feel. They have also made a great job optimizing the touch response, so it feels very snappy and accurate for everyday use.

With around 550 nits of peak brightness, the display can be used under direct sunlight but can sometimes pose viewability problems in harsh outdoor settings. Indoors and under normal deployment, the display works perfectly. The display supports DC Dimming and basic eye protection modes, reducing eye fatigue during long usage or for reading at night.

Despite having a large display area, the excessively thick chin and water-drop notch somehow spoil the flow of a modern design. Yet, at this price range, it is a tradeoff most would gladly make, especially with the super performance and clarity of the panel.

Camera

There is a single 50MP camera on the backside of the Redmi A4 5G, which may seem somewhat basic when compared to the triple and quad-camera configuration present on other smartphones, yet it actually manages to work pretty well for scenic shots in that segment. Xiaomi has worked on optimizing the main sensor and one will most definitely see the result in most mundane scenarios.

Redmi A4 5G camera

In daylight, the 50MP sensor produces sharp images with good detail and well-balanced color tones. The colors come out well without appearing to be exaggerated; with the autofocus geared much for stills. The disadvantage is that since it lacks any other lenses, such as an ultra-wide or depth sensor, versatility in shooting is compromised.

When it comes to dim light, things get a little tougher for the camera. Noise starts creeping in. Probably in bright gloom fine details start to blur. One has a night mode, but it really is not a variation in importance(much): brightness increases, but sharpness does barely, nor does depth.

Front Camera & Portrait Mode

On the front side, Redmi A4 5G sports a 5MP selfie shooter, which in 2025 is considered very few megapixels. In good lighting, it takes some mediocre selfies that look soft and lack details and DR. In artificial or low light, it just softens the image and struggles with noise. The portrait selfies are enabled via software and can generate decent shots, but edge detection can be incorrect at times-in particular around hair or accessories.

Video Recording

Both lenses can record videos at 1080p30. Stabilization is very minimal, and thus footage can appear very shaky when handheld. Color reproduction is fair; however, contrast and dynamic range can sometimes shift depending on lighting. Suitable for basic video usage such as short clips or video calls, but not professional content creation.

Performance

The Redmi A4 5G is powered by Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 chipset; it’s an octa-core processor that uses a 4nm process technology. It also features two high-performance Cortex-A78 CPUs CLUs, six efficient Cortex-A55 CPUs CLUs along with Adreno for graphics processing. The phone features LPDDR4x RAM and UFS 3.1 storage meaning that switching between apps or loading the app takes little time.

Redmi A4 5G performance

In terms of thermal management, it is all so well-optimized that the phone keeps a comfortable temperature through prolonged sessions. Storage goes up to 128GB UFS 2.2, allowing for faster app loading times and smoother performance as compared to older budget phones with traditional eMMC storage.

Software

Redmi A4 5G comes with MIUI 14 based on Android 13, offering a well-established and feature-rich UI that has grown over time. Given its entry-level class, the software feels very smooth and highly optimized, especially thanks to the 90Hz refresh rate display. Moving around the UI feels smooth and animations are well polished for this price class.

MIUI 14 sticks to Xiaomi’s trademark design language. It lets you customize themes, keep widgets on the always-on display, and allows the splitting of the notification-control center. Some cool features include Dual Apps, Second Space, and Lite Mode, making it a good fit for all users, ranging from rookie cellphone buyers to seasoned Android pros.

Security updates and future OS upgrades haven’t been officially detailed, but Xiaomi typically promises at least 2 years of software support for its A-series phones.

Battery and Charging

The Redmi A4 5G houses a reliable 5160 mAh battery, a generous capacity for a budget-class smartphone. This capacity ensures it easily delivers a full day's worth of usage—whether it’s messaging, streaming video, browsing, or light gaming. Moderate users frequently report over 6 to 7 hours of screen-on time, making the phone dependable for work and everyday routine.

Charging is handled via a 33W wired charger in the box, which feels modest compared to modern standards. A full charge typically takes around 2 to 2.5 hours, which may seem slow but remains functional for overnight charging or desk use. The device lacks fast charge support, and there's no option for wireless charging—but that’s unsurprising for a budget offering.

Connectivity and 5G Integration

The Redmi A4 5G stands out as one of the most affordable 5G smartphones. With a Snapdragon X61 modem integrated into its chipset, the phone offers seamless 5G connectivity with download speeds up to 1Gbps. It also supports dual-frequency GPS (L1+L5), GLONASS, and India’s NavIC system for enhanced navigation.

Additional connectivity features include dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, a USB Type-C port, and a 3.5mm headphone jack, catering to users who still prefer wired audio options.

Final Thoughts

The Redmi A4 5G is quite an efficient step by the company Xiaomi in terms of the low-end market. Credit goes to the processor and long-lasting battery, reasonable cameras, and above all, the first-ever 5G-enabled smart device- Redmi A4 5G is worth every penny. It can inspire more affordable 5G cheap devices that can easily be accessed by more consumers in the market.
