Expert point of view

Vivo Y18 is a budget-oriented smartphone that combines style and performance and offers everyday functionality within the budget of its target audience. As a part of the favorite Y series from Vivo, the Y18 is chiefly aimed at youth and first-time buyers who want to have a trustworthy device with contem features. It mingles style with the peppy MediaTek Helio G85 processor, a crisp display, and a hefty 5000mAh battery. Given its focus on a smooth user experience and essential features like Extended RAM, dual-camera setup, and Android 14-based Funtouch OS, the Vivo Y18 stands out as a smart choice for an entry-level mobile beast yet very reliable and stylish.

Design

This device comes with the Vivo Y18 series, which was officially launched on May 4, 2024, with a slim budget smartphone experience. The 6.56-inch HD+ touchscreen display has a resolution of 1612 x 720 pixels with a 90Hz refresh rate for bright graphics and smooth scrolling. And a screen with a pixel density of 269 ppi means clear and sharp content.

The Vivo Y18 operates as a dual SIM smartphone, with two attractive color options: Gem Green and Space Black. With 163.63 x 75.58 x 8.39 mm, the device is well-sized and sturdy, weighing 185 grams. It has an IP54 rating against dust and light splashes.

Display

The Vivo Y18 displays a sleek and stylish design finished in a highly glossy manner, which imparts a feeling of luxury in the hand. The slender body with rounded edges allows the user a comfortable grip, perfectly suiting it for an everyday phone. There lies a modern waterdrop notch in the front so that the screen-to-body ratio is maximized for a more immersive experience. The rear also has a well-integrated camera module, which increases aesthetic appeal. The Vivo Y18 comes in funky colors that accentuate the youthful feel of the phone.

Vivo Y18 Display

It has a 6.56-inch HD+ display with a refresh rate of 90Hz, which makes scrolling smoother and touch response snappier. The colors are vivid while there is sufficient brightness for use indoors; however, it may not fare so well when used under direct sunlight. The design feels a little stale and reminds me of the waterdrop notch, but it does not restrict overall usability. For what its price segment.

Camera

The Vivo Y18 has a rear camera with a 50MP sensor and an aperture of f/1.8, which impresses in sharp image quality and decent low-light performance. This camera supports multiple modes like Night, Portrait, Panorama, and AI Scene Detection, making it versatile for different photography scenarios.

The image quality is great for the price range however, some users feel that the phone does not use all 50 MP worth of resolution due to limitations in the display. All in all, it seems great for the price-conscious users looking for a capable camera phone.

Front Camera

The front 8 MP camera of the Vivo Y18 with an f/2.0 aperture successfully takes nice selfies and makes smooth video calls. It has capable modes for many lighting conditions, such as Night, Portrait, and Live Photo. Nevertheless, while sufficient for regular use, the camera scores low in comparison with a high-end model.

Performance

The Viva Y18 presents dependable performance for everyday scenarios, powered by the MediaTek Helio G85 processor. Multitasking should be smooth, with some social media browsing and watching videos thrown in for good measure. The chipset is coupled with up to 6GB RAM (with extended RAM) that allows switching between apps with no lag.

Gameplay performance is decent for casual games but may throw in some issues with heavier games at high settings. The phone runs on Funtouch OS based on Android 14 and is well-optimized for crisp and responsive navigation.

It offers excellent heat dissipation, so the casing never becomes uncomfortable to hold even when holding for extended use. App loading times are good, and background-running apps appear to be managed well, thus leading to better efficiency. Storage read/write speeds are adequate for everyday use. All things considered, the Vivo Y18 gives reliable performance in its segment, thus catering to students and light-to-moderate users.

Software

The Vivo Y18 operates using Android 14 encrypted with Funtouch 14, so users are treated to a very simple interface and an easy learning curve. However, reports have come from users regarding performance problems, such as slow launching of applications and multitasking difficulties, especially with the 4GB RAM variant. The MediaTek Helio G85 processor, which is based on the 12nm older process, has also been blamed for overheating issues during intensive use, such as playing games and streaming videos. While it does cover the important feature needs, the entire experience probably wouldn't be what users expect, seeking a smooth-running device.

Battery and charging

Vivo Y18 gets a 5000mAh battery that promises a long run on a single charge. Many users also suggest that the battery performs well during a day of moderate usage. Yet, some users feel that the battery life is shorter than expected, citing display brightness and refresh rate settings as a possible reason. The phone can be fast-charged at 15 watts, allowing for quicker top-ups. The battery is very much fit for everyday use, but heavy users may have to charge frequently.

Vivo Y18 Battery

Its 15W fast charging, compared to current smartphone standards, is not so impressive, which essentially translates into longer charging times. These charging speeds may not just cut it for heavy users, but they would work just fine for moderate use and long days. Some third-party 18W chargers can charge a little faster, even though the phone does not officially support them. Battery performance on the whole is good for the class, while charging may be a little.

Expert Rating: 5.5/10
