Expert point of view

The death of the Fan Edition, long live FE series. Yet while the new Samsung Galaxy S23 FE is certainly reviving that affordable flagship feeling, there's no suggestion of course as to what those original finding essential (or Fabulous Extras) are all about. The Galaxy S23 FE doesn't lack any of these. The Galaxy S23 FE is an update to the mostly well-liked Galaxy S21 FE, upping the performance level and improving optics as well. The usual stuff.

But the real highlight here is its design -easy and smooth DYR3 Purple. Nothing out of this world. They are one of the nicest-looking colorways we have seen in years, and they just fall under my radar. The phone has an IP68 rating and a similar appearance to the Galaxy S23 series, although with matte sides. The front panel is the screen from a Galaxy 21 FE, a 6.4-inch Dynamic AMOLED 2X with 1080p resolution and a refresh rate of up to 120Hz.

Design and Display

Samsung Galaxy S23 FE MOBILE

The Samsung Galaxy S23 FE is closely similar to the Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus when it comes to design; it has a flat glass back supporting three individual camera rings. The aluminium frame forms a smooth curve on the sides but has quite sharp corners. Weighing in at just 209 grams, holding the device for long periods, watching videos, or browsing may prove to be a little heavy. Nonetheless, the build quality feels premium and very sturdy in hand. The sleekly modern design resurges with Samsung's flagship aesthetics.

Samsung Galaxy S23 FE mobile display

The Samsung Galaxy S23 FE comes with a vibrant 6.4-inch FHD+ Dynamic AMOLED 2X display that offers mesmerizing visuals with rich colors and deep contrasts. The 120Hz refresh rate makes scrolling and animations smooth and responsive, perfect for gaming and multimedia. HDR10+ support enhances the viewing experience even further with brightness and color accuracy. So, even under direct sunlight, the high peak brightness ensures good visibility outdoors. The eye comfort features from Samsung also help relieve eye strain during prolonged usage. The display is, without a doubt, one of the highlights of the Galaxy S23 FE in this price segment!

The Galaxy S23 FE is a well-constructed, premium-feeling device with an undeniable aesthetic appeal. And yeah, slipping out of hands it is -- you cannot get around that with the Xperia 5 (but then this isn't very large either, which automatically makes single-hand use a base easier). But it has a weirdly heavy touch, which might not appeal to everyone.

Bottom line, it is a really good phone with a flagship design and water protection, but them huge screen bezels along with a weight of 209g may repulse some consumers.

Camera

Samsung Galaxy S23 arrives with triple rear cameras - a 50MP main, 12MP ultra-wide, and 8MP telephoto - and delivers amazing photography in bright and low-light conditions. The main sensor shoots sharp and clear images in bright colors with accurate exposure. The night mode provides clarity and reduces noise in dimly lit environments, thus enhancing evening shots. The ultra-wide lens offers additional options for landscape and group images, while details are captured on the 3x telephoto lens in zoom shots.

Samsung Galaxy S23 FE mobile front and back camera

The front camera setup of the Samsung Galaxy S23 FE consists of a 10MP sensor capable of taking great-looking, vibrant selfies in bright light. It maintains natural skin tone and supports good dynamic range, apt for sharing on social media. Low light may present some image noise; the fixed-focus lens may sometimes adversely impact sharpness. Portrait mode does reasonably well for some separation of background, although edge detection can find it difficult when faced with complex backgrounds. Another front camera highlight is 4K video recording at 60fps, making it suitable for content creators. Overall, the back camera of the S23 FE will deliver an excellent and premium photography experience at a mid-range price.

Performance and Software

The Samsung Galaxy S23 FE stands up to daily performance, powered by the 4nm Exynos 2200 chipset in India. It multitasks between applications smoothly, providing a near-flagship experience. However, heating tends to set in during intensive gaming, such as Genshin Impact, which, over time, could hinder performance. Larger vapor chambers have been put to work against thermal throttling to some extent. The S23 FE is reliable for everyday activities but wouldn't sit well with an ardent gaming enthusiast.

Samsung Galaxy S23 FE operates on One UI 5.1 which runs on Android 13 and can be upgraded to Android 14. The interface is very user-friendly with almost zero bloatware. Furthermore, it is the cleanest and most easily understood interface, mixed with practical features such as Edge Panels, Smart View, and Samsung DeX that promote productivity. App performance is responsive, while multitasking is fluid due to the optimization installed from Samsung. Regular software updates mean that there will be added benefits in the long term from security patches. In conclusion, the software offers a really good experience very close to flagship-level Galaxy devices.

Battery and Charging

The Samsung Galaxy S23 FE has a very good 4,500mAh battery lasting a day of moderate use, mostly for browsing, streaming, and very light gaming. Intensive tasks like gaming quickly drain the battery. Charging speeds are comparatively moderate, with 25W wired charging taking about 30 minutes to reach 58% and around 84 minutes to fully recharge. Wireless charging is available at 15W, taking approximately 2 hours to fully charge. The box does not feature a charger; thus, to achieve optimal charging speeds, it is necessary to purchase the compatible 25W charger separately. To summarize, while the S23 FE has decent battery life to see one through his/her daily chores, its charging times are somewhat slower than some other competing models.

Conclusion

Samsung Galaxy S23 FE is a terrible name but it could still be a late bloomer once the price becomes right That might be why this late Galaxy S22 FE demands attention: a dual-glass design, an OLED display we enjoy looking at and using, decent enough performance for virtually every task I threw its way consistently good cameras (we'll get to those again in a bit), awesome speakers, flagship software.

We appreciated the dual-glass design, and we like some of the new colors. We wish it were both smaller and lighter, but at 9.6 ounces with broad bezels around the edges, even as large tablets go this one is a bit of a porker yes, believe it or not we're declaring that about tablet; Sony's new Xperia Z tab weighs almost exactly half that amount--and that version should have an inch (give or take) of diagonal to spare on Samsung biggest. Nevertheless, the S23 FE is reproduced in a traditional type that we think loads will certainly favor.

So, the Galaxy S23 FE is a great all-rounder smartphone, quite like being branded as one of those flagship-killers, although 1 year too late.
